Protect Your Child

St. Anthony Prayer
St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and charity for his creatures, made you worthy, when on earth, to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought, I ask you to obtain for me the favors that I seek (state your request here).

The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so, you are the Saint of Miracles.

O gentle and loving St. Anthony, whose heart was full of sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the Infant Jesus, who loved to be held in your arms; and the gratitude of my heart will ever by yours.

Dear Lord,
You know that everyone is my brother and sister.I call them my Siblings
You know my siblings so much better than I do. You know their sickness and the burden they carry. You also know their hearts. Lord, I ask you to be with then now, working in their lives Let your will be done in their lives . If there is a sin that needs to be confessed and forgiven, Lord, please help themto see their needs and please accept my confession in the name of them . Lord, I pray for my siblings because your Word says I should pray for their healings. I believe you hear this earnest prayer from my heart and that it is powerful because of your promise. I have faith in you to heal them, but I also trust in the plan you have for them . Lord, I don't always understand your ways, and why my siblings have to suffer, but I trust you. I ask that you look with mercy and grace toward them . Nourish their spirits and souls in this time of suffering and comfort them with your presence. Let them know you are there with them through this difficulty. And may you be glorified in their lives because i can be happy only when they are happy and healed
Amen

The most effective tool in protecting your child is good communication. All too often, parents avoid discussing the dangers of abduction with their children because they:
are uncomfortable with the subject matter.
do not want to scare the child.
do not have a clear understanding of what the child should do to stay safe.
Let’s face it. These dangers exist, they can happen to anyone. Teaching your child how to avoid abduction should be approached in the same way as teaching your child to avoid getting hit by a car when crossing the street.

There are rules the child should follow to stay safe. If the rules aren’t followed the child could get hurt.

Initially, you and your child should practice implementing these rules until your child understands them well enough to apply them in varying scenarios. Once you are confident that your child has the ability to utilize these skills on their own, you allow them the freedom to “cross the street” by themselves.

Know Your Child

Keep printed records of any medical conditions, required medications, and current dental records.
Have current video and/or photographs of your child in a variety of poses and expressions.

You may consider the options of fingerprinting or using a blood/hair sample kit for DNA identification.

Know your child’s friends and their families. Get to know their names, their addresses, phone numbers, etc.

Before you allow your child to go to the home of one of their friends, you should learn who lives in the house or visits frequently.

Before you allow your child to stay for the weekend at a friend’s home you should know who will be caring for the child. At any time will there be a babysitter. You should familiarize yourself with the area so you know how to get there or how give directions to another party if necessary.

Familiarize yourself with your child’s schedule. Know where and how they spend their day.

Know your child’s preferred route to school, playground, store, etc.

Ensure your child knows they can call you at any time if plans have changed or if they need you to pick them up.

Get to know the child’s teachers and any clubs they might belong to.

Make sure schools, daycares, babysitters, etc., have updated relevant information on you including pick-up person, contact information, current address, vacations planned, etc.

Do a background check on babysitters, daycares, after school programs, camps, etc., before registering your child.

As you can see, many of these safety tools are dependant on you and your child feeling comfortable talking about anything and everything. You need to reinforce to your child that you love them and you would never leave them. You need to encourage them to communicate anything unusual that someone may tell them. They need to know that you care about what is happening in their life and that you are truly interested in knowing about them.

Street Proofing

Teach your child to recognize dangerous situations, and arm them with the following tools to avoid or effectively respond to them.

Establish a very specific list of people your child has permission to go with or get rides from: (e.g. Specific family members, babysitter, anyone you feel you can trust your child with)

Establish a password or secret code system.

This should be utilized when you need someone else other than the usual person to pick your child up, in emergencies, etc. Teach your child that if someone comes to pick them up, the person must know the password. If the person cannot repeat the password to your child, the child should refuse accompany this individual and go to the nearest trusted adult. (Note that once the password has been used outside of your family, a new password should be initiated)

Whenever possible, you should inform all concerned parties that someone else will be picking up your child. If the child is at school, call the office and tell them who will be picking up your child, for example.

Tell your child that under no circumstances are they to enter someone’s home, enter someone’s vehicle, or go with someone unless they have received your permission to do so or the person has given your child the password (see number 2).

Establish a list of people your child is allowed to approach for help e.g. teachers, police, neighbours, block parents, store clerk, etc. However, instruct your child that they must never enter the homes or vehicles of these peopl unless they have been given your permission to do so.

Establish a plan of action for your child regarding what they should do in various scenarios. For example, you may teach your child that if they are separated from you at the shopping mall they can seek assistance from a store clerk, and information booth, a security guard, etc. Do the same for various scenarios e.g. outdoor events, amusement parks, theatres, on the street, etc.

On family outings, establish a pre-arranged meeting area in the event that you and your child become separated.

Periodically quiz your child on different scenarios of potentially dangerous situations and the different lures that predators might use to gain their trust. Ensure they are armed with a variety of effective responses to these situations.

Practice talking to the operator, making collect calls, using a pay phone, calling 911, sending email, etc.

Teach your children that if someone they don’t know calls them by name, they should stay away from them. The person may have heard someone else call the child by name or seen the child’s name on a booklet or binder. Ensure that your child’s name is not displayed on their jacket, backpack, binders, etc., to avoid this potentially dangerous situation.

Encourage your child to use the buddy system. They should travel in groups and avoid poorly lit, isolated areas.

Never leave your child alone. Attend your children, especially if they are younger, to the washroom, and don’t let them wander around alone in a mall, on a beach, etc.

Make sure your child understands that it is okay to say "no" when they feel threatened or uncomfortable.

Teach your children how to draw attention to themselves by yelling, kicking, and fighting back when they are in danger or feel threatened. With smaller children, abductors may try to convince passersby that the child is their own, and is just throwing a tantrum. Teach the child to shout help, this is not my parent, I’m being abducted, etc.

Make sure your children understand that they should always inform you of where they will be, who they will be with, the address and phone number where they can be reached, etc.

Ensure that your children know that they must inform you of any change in plans and tell to you the new details.

PLEASE PUT THIS RIBBON ON YOUR PAGES IF YOU WISH TO SUPPORT US WITH YOUR COMPASSION AND AWARENESS

In gratitude,
the missing children family and team

Remember Missing Children's Day is May 25th Please Leave your porch lights on!

When a child first goes missing, the police, the media and the community all rally together to help the terrified and grieving family search for their child, but as time goes by, that involvement gradually decreases, leaving the family to continue the search…alone.

It is for these families the Missing Children Society of Canada was established in 1986. Since that time, our unique and comprehensive search program called Project: Reunite has assisted police and searching families in the active and ongoing search for missing children.

Our investigators have closed 1,600 cases since 1986–an average

Wouldn't it be great if YOU could say I
helped bring a child home today?
Please take the time to check out these sites
and each state for these missing children.

“Light the Way Home” For Missing Children

This campaign, now in its 15th year, runs during the month of May each year leading up to National Missing Children's Day on May 25th.

The campaign has three aims:

Reach millions of Canadians from coast to coast with the message “Light a candle on the evening of May 25th to help Light the Way Home for missing children.”
Increase public awareness and involvement in the search for missing children.
Raise funds to help MCSC continue its active search for all missing children.
On May 25th, we ask you to join us in lighting a candle in remembrance and in hope of all missing children. Together, our candles shining brightly become a symbol of the hope we all share for the safe return of missing children everywhere. This simple act reassures searching families that their children are not forgotten.

Please click here for information on the many ways you can help Light the Way Home this year.

Together, we can bring the children home.

More At ....http://www.mcsc.ca/LTWH.aspx

An average of 60,000 children are reported missing in Canada every year.

That's an average of 1 child every 9 minutes. Together, we can help Light the Way Home.

Every May, MCSC coordinates our national "Light the Way Home" campaign to raise awareness and financial support for our investigative programs. We rely on the community's support to help us bring home the children.

There are a number of ways you can support our 'Light the Way Home' campaign.

DNA I.D. Kits

DNA Identification Clinics are set up by MCSC in shopping centres and at special events. These clinics provide parents with an identification kit of their children which they take home with them.

The DNA Identification kit includes a DNA sample which is taken by rubbing a cotton swab inside the child's mouth and placing the swab in a fixative solution in a vial. The child's DNA will be preserved for more than 80 years.

DNA are availabe upon request. Donations are appreciated. MCSC does not cover shipping.

Saint Anthony of Padua
Holy Saint Anthony, gentle and powerful in your help, your love for God and charity for His creatures, made you worthy, when on earth, to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were always ready to request for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought, I implore you to obtain for me (request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle. Even so, you are the Saint of miracles. Gentle and loving Saint Anthony, whose heart is ever full of human sympathy, take my petition to the Infant Savior for whom you have such a great love, and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Amen.
Saint Anthony, Performer of Miracles
Dear St. Anthony, your prayers obtained miracles during your lifetime. You still seem to move at ease in the realm of minor and major miracles. St. Anthony, Performer of Miracles, please obtain for me the blessings God holds in reserve who serve Him. Pray that I may be worthy of the promises my Lord Jesus attaches to confident prayer. (Mention your special intentions.)
Saint Anthony, Guide of Pilgrims
Dear St. Anthony, we are all pilgrims. We came from God and we are going to Him. He who created us will welcome us at journey's end. The Lord Jesus is preparing a place for all His brothers and sisters. St. Anthony, Guide of Pilgrims, direct my steps in the straight path. Protect me until I am safely home in heaven. Help me in all my needs and difficulties. (Name them.)
Saint Anthony, Generator of Charity
Dear St. Anthony, God wants us to see Christ, our brother, in everyone and love Him truly in word and in deed. God wills that we share with others the joy of His boundless love. St. Anthony, Generator of Charity, remember me in the Father's presence, that I may be generous in sharing the joy of His love. Remember also the special intentions I now entrust to you. (Name them.)
Saint Anthony, Zealous for Justice
Dear St. Anthony, you were prompt to fulfill all justice. You gave God and His creation the service He required from you. You respected other people's rights and treated them with kindness and understanding. St. Anthony, Zealous for Justice, teach me the beauty of this virtue. Make me prompt to fulfill all justice toward God and toward all creation. Help me also in my pressing needs. (Name them.)
Saint Anthony, Martyr of Desire
Dear St. Anthony, you became a Franciscan with the hope of shedding your blood for Christ. In God's plan for you, your thirst for martyrdom was never to be satisfied. St. Anthony, Martyr of Desire, pray that I may become less afraid to stand up and be counted as a follower of the Lord Jesus. Intercede also for my other intentions. (Name them.)
Saint Anthony, Example of Humility
Dear St. Anthony, after all these years in the school of Christ, I still haven't learned the lesson of true humility. My feelings are easily ruffled. Quick to take offense, I am slow to forgive. St. Anthony, Example of Humility, teach me the importance and necessity of this Christian virtue. In the presence of Jesus, who humbled Himself and whom the Father exalted, remember also these special intentions of mine. (Name them.)
Saint Anthony, Model of Perfection
Dear St. Anthony, you took the words of Jesus seriously, "Be perfect, even as your heavenly Father is perfect." The Church honors you as a Christian hero, a man wholly dedicated to God's glory and the good of the redeemed. St. Anthony, Model of Perfection, ask Jesus to strengthen my good dispositions and to make me more like you, more like Him. Obtain for me the other favors I need. (Name them.)

Saint Anthony, Consoler of the Afflicted
Dear St. Anthony, comforting the sorrowful is a Christian duty and a work of mercy. By word, attitude, and deed I should try to brighten their days and make their burden easier to bear. St. Anthony, Consoler of the Afflicted, may I remember when helping someone in sorrow that I am helping Christ Himself. Kindly mention my pressing needs to Him. (Name you special intentions).

Saint Anthony, Liberator of Prisoners
Dear St. Anthony, I am imprisoned by walls of selfishness, prejudice, suspicion. I am enslaved by human respect and the fear of other people's opinions of me. St. Anthony, Liberator of Prisoners, tear down my prison walls. Break the chains that hold me captive. Make me free with the freedom Christ has won for me. To your powerful intercession I also recommend these intentions. (Name them.)

Saint Anthony, Restorer of Speech to the Mute
Dear St. Anthony, how tongue-tied I can be when I should be praising God and defending the oppressed. My cowardice often strikes me dumb; I am afraid to open my mouth. St. Anthony, Restorer of Speech to the Mute, release me from my fears. Teach me to praise God and to champion the rights of those unjustly treated. Please remember also all my intentions. (Name them.)

Saint Anthony, Restorer of Sight to the Blind
Dear St. Anthony, you recall the Gospel episode about the blind man who, partly healed, could see men "looking like walking trees." After a second laying-on of Jesus's hands, he could see perfectly. St. Anthony, Restorer of Sight to the Blind, please sharpen my spiritual vision. May I see people, not as trees or numbers, but as sons and daughters of the Most High. Help me in my pressing needs. (Name your special intentions.)

Saint Anthony, Disperser of Devils
Dear St. Anthony, it is still as St. Peter said: The devil prowls about, lion-like, looking for someone to devour. I confess that I don't always resist him; I sometimes toy with temptation. St. Anthony, Disperser of Devils, remind me of my duty to avoid all occasions of sin. May I always pray in temptation that I may remain loyal to my Lord Jesus. Pray for my other intentions, please. (Name them.)

Saint Anthony, Reviver of the Dead
Dear St. Anthony, I believe in the resurrection of the body. I have Christ's solemn pledge that whoever believes in Him, though he should die, shall live again. St. Anthony, Reviver of the Dead, through your mighty prayers life was restored to the dead. Confirm my faith in the resurrection. Make me a confident Christian who expects a glorious Easter beyond the grave. Please take my need to God in prayer. (Name your special intentions.)

Safety Online
The Internet is a very valuable tool, but also can be a very dangerous place for child. These tips will help you and your child develop safe practices while surfing the Internet.

Awareness: Place your home computer in a place where your child can be easily supervised, such as the living room or kitchen. Check out the sites your child is visiting. Let your child know that not all information on the Internet is true. A person your child talks to online may not be who they say they are.
Protection: Warn your children not to give out personal information over the Internet, including their full name, address, photos or the school they attend. You could also check if there are any blocking features offered through your Internet service provider. There are online services and software available to filter out offensive material.
New Interest: Tell your child that talking to a stranger on the Internet is the same as talking to one on the street. If your child begins placing phone calls to strangers or receives calls from unfamiliar people, investigate immediately. If your child decides to meet someone off the Internet, they must get your permission and meet him or her in a public place.
Guidance: Talk as a family and come up with an agreement about Internet use. This should include sites that shouldn't be accessed and hours of use. Always let your child know that they can talk to you if someone is pressing them for personal information.
Danger: Let your child know that they can talk to you or go to a teacher or trusted adult if someone has made them feel uncomfortable, said something inappropriate, is pressuring to meet them or has harassed them online. Immediately contact the police if your child gets sent sexually explicit material or has been sexually solicited.
